It’s early on a Saturday morning, and I find myself in a quiet moment of reflection, sipping coffee and pondering the power of authenticity. There’s something about these peaceful moments that feels almost meditative, offering a perfect opportunity to explore thoughts and put them into words.
As I embark on this journey of creating a website and starting a blog, I’m reminded of the importance of storytelling. While I’ve always been a fan of journaling, blogging presents a unique opportunity to share not just my own story, but the stories of others – to amplify the human experience in all its beautiful complexity.
Recently, a conversation with a colleague about improving outcomes for kids led to an unexpected text message. In it, they thanked me and called me a “dope human.” That simple phrase got me thinking deeply about authenticity and its crucial role in our lives, especially for the students we nurture every day.
I’ll be honest – it took me a long time to fully embrace my authentic self, particularly in my professional life. For years, I felt pressured to conform to what was considered “normal” or expected for leadership roles. You know the drill – formal suits, uncomfortable shoes, a certain way of speaking and presenting myself. I thought that’s what it meant to be a leader, to be taken seriously.
But here’s the thing – that wasn’t me. And pretending to be someone I wasn’t didn’t make me a better leader. If anything, it held me back from fully expressing my ideas, my creativity, and my passion for education.
It was a journey to realize that my authenticity – including my love for bright, colorful sneakers, vibrant glasses, and expressive jackets – wasn’t just acceptable, but valuable. These weren’t just fashion choices; they were expressions of who I am at my core: someone who values comfort, creativity, and the ability to move quickly and adapt to our students’ needs.
Every time I lace up my sneakers now, I’m making a conscious choice to be authentically me. It’s a small act of self-expression that carries deep meaning, serving as a daily affirmation of my values and approach to education and life.
This personal journey has made me even more passionate about creating an environment where our students feel free to be themselves from day one. I don’t want them to waste years trying to fit into someone else’s idea of what they should be. I want them to be proud and grateful for their uniqueness now.
Why? Because in this rapidly changing world, authenticity isn’t just about personal fulfillment – it’s a crucial skill for the future. The ability to know who you are, to express your unique ideas, to bring your whole self to the table – these are the qualities that will help our kids thrive in a world that’s constantly evolving.
This reflection has inspired me to start a new category on this blog: “Amplifying Authenticity: Leveling Up by Being You.” In this series, I want to highlight individuals who are making a positive impact on the world by embracing and amplifying their authentic selves. It’s an opportunity to express gratitude by sharing stories of those who inspire us to be more genuinely ourselves.
As I sit here, filled with gratitude for this moment of clarity and the platform to share these thoughts, I’m excited about the journey ahead. I’m looking forward to exploring more about what makes each of us unique, and how we can create environments – in our schools and beyond – that celebrate and nurture that uniqueness from day one.
To everyone reading this, I want to express my deepest appreciation. Your engagement and support make it possible for us to have these important conversations. Together, we can create a world where authenticity is not just accepted, but celebrated – where being your true self is seen as the superpower it truly is.
Here’s to embracing our authentic selves, to wearing our metaphorical (or literal) colorful sneakers with pride, and to always striving to be “dope humans” in our own unique ways. And here’s to creating a future where our kids never have to learn this lesson the hard way – where they grow up knowing that their uniqueness is their strength.
With heartfelt gratitude and excitement for what’s to come,
BB

It was absolutely beautifully written and I connected with it on so many levels. It touched my heart and soul. It gives a message about being true to you and the importance of “highlighting “ the color in our lives to allow our student and those we lead to shine brightly.
Your words have touched me deeply. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your connection to this piece. It’s moments like these that remind me why we do what we do in education.
Knowing that this message resonated with you on such a personal level fills me with joy and renewed purpose. You’re absolutely right – it’s all about allowing ourselves and those around us to shine brightly in our own unique colors. Your insight about “highlighting” the color in our lives is beautiful and so spot-on.
Together, we can create a world where authenticity isn’t just accepted, but celebrated. A world where our students feel empowered to be true to themselves from day one.
